Scratchin’ My Head And Askin’ “Why”??!!
Our little corner of the world got pummeled with a snowstorm that started on January 25th and left us with around 22” of snow at the Homestead. The grandkids’ school district shut down for an entire week because of the snow and the bitter cold temps that sometimes went down to -21º!
I waded in snow that was above my knees to feed my birds. I went outside in the frigid temps to make silly “Redneck News” weather report videos to post on my personal Facebook page. My spouse was busy plowing and shoveling snow – rinse, lather, repeat.
I guess it was inevitable that we both got hit hard with colds, bronchitis, and sinusitis. Two weeks later and we are still sick and tired… and grumpy.
When I get tired and sick, little things just grate on my nerves. And I’ve been sitting here in my office just scratchin’ my head and askin’ out lout, “WHY”?! to so many things that are probably trivial and trite but they are getting under my skin.
Last week I got an email saying that my package from a very large, well-known company had been delivered to my house. I went outside and it wasn’t on my porch. I trudged through 22” of icy snow to walk around my house and look on my front porch. Nada, zip. I came back inside and checked my email again and saw where I could click to see a photo of evidence of exactly where my package had been left by a third party delivery person. Folks, the above photo is what I was given. Do you see a package? Me, either. I actually put my boots on again and walked down both roads and looked over the fields and nope, no package.
The other thing that is bugging me is these “Free” Facebook groups, which were originally set up for people to offer items they no longer wanted to anyone interested. One of the groups I belong to has now dissolved into people pretty much begging on a weekly, if not daily basis for things from food, pop, diapers, clothes, to even entire furnishings for a home and yes, even cars! And then they usually ask for everything to be delivered. And if anyone points out that these people are asking for a little too much, too often, the other group members pitch a fit and ask, “Where is your humanity? Why can’t you help these people out?” Yet those same people never offer to personally help. WHY?! I got taken advantage once back in 2024 at Christmastime and to be fair, my husband told me that I was getting scammed, but I felt soft-hearted and truly believed that this person needed help. So now I just read the posts and scratch my head.
As you know, I am a big birder and the other day I went in search of a rare bird that’s in the area. My man drove me because it was out in the boonies on a narrow, icy road. We arrived at the location and there were several other cars already parked and other birders were clustered together and talking. One spoke to me and the others just looked at me with a little disdain. Birding is very competitive to some people! One woman said, “I feel as though this is ‘our spot’ and I get upset when all of these people show up.” I just rolled my eyes but, in my head, I was saying, “WTF, lady, this is State Gamelands. You don’t own this land and I see you all over the place whenever you hear about a rare bird sighting.” Disgusted, I walked back to the pick-up, where my husband was reclined in his seat and taking a nap. (He’s NOT a birder!) I told him about the old biddy and he acted with mock outrage but I think he was inwardly laughing at the craziness of birders. So we came home and I ate ice cream and took another cold pill and found an Amazon package had been thrown on my front porch and I had to put on my boots and slip and slide through 22” of ice snow to retrieve it. WHY?! WHY?! WHY?!!!
