"STORIES"

Working Show Truck Of The Month

Scott Ballard & Jon Donadio

As we head into 2012, the trend on the working show truck scene continues to favor the "old school" look with more and more drivers continuing to use the "less is more" approach.  Clean lines that flow from the front bumper right back to the mud flaps continue to be popular as does the use of "old school" or retro paint schemes.  Our January working show truck of the month, a customized 2012 Peterbilt 389, has that "old-school" look thanks to its clean, simple lines and striking black and yellow paint scheme.

The truck is owned by Scott Ballard, who runs and operates SC Ballard Fleet. SC Ballard has a total of 14 trucks, pulling a number of tankers and dump trailers in the Northeast.  Scott's fleet features a number of sharp rides but this yellow and black beauty is his pride and joy.  The truck is driven by Scott's operations manager Jon Donadio.

The truck started its life as a glider kit.  Scott and Jon credit Charlie and Kansas City Peterbilt for spec'ing the truck right and Clint Moore and the crew for customizing it just the way they wanted.  Clint is a lifetime self-proclaimed "truck-nut" and has spent the last 14 yrs as a salesman at KC Peterbilt.  He specs, orders, and customizes rigs for customers and the finished products sport the "old school" look that is so popular today.  Scott's Peterbilt features a custom "Clint Moore" visor, painted Fisher 1/2 fenders, black powder-coated fuel tanks and brackets, and a custom flush-mounted deck plate.  The truck's 285 wheelbase appears longer than it is thanks to the painted lower cab and sleeper extensions.  A set of 7" straight pipes, complete with "Pickett" elbows, helps round out the truck's clean and classy look.

Jon Donadio pulls a 2007 East frameless 40' dump trailer with Scott's Peterbilt, hauling loads of mulch, sand, decorative store and contaminated soil.  Power comes from a 6 NZ C-15 CAT engine that's paired with an 18-speed transmission and a set of 3:70 rears.  This yellow and black ride, along with Scott's solid yellow Pete 389 (which was also built by Clint Moore) both feature the CAT 6 NZ engines which come from a 2003 Freightliner and a wrecked 2001 379 Peterbilt.

Scott Ballard's uncle and close friend both drove trucks and once Scott got his CDL, he bought his uncle's 1985 Western Star and hasn't looked back since.  Scott has been trucking for 15 years and Jon has been in trucking for 11 years himself.  They both agreed that their most memorable experience was flying out to KC Peterbilt to pick up the yellow and black 389 along with the solid yellow 389.  They drove them back to Connecticut and turned heads at each mile marker along the way!

Thanks to all of their hard work and determination Scott and Jon have turned SC Ballard into a successful company even in today's tough economy.  Scott wanted to thank his wife Lori for all of her support and along with his kids Nick, Russ, and Rachel.  They both thanked Clint Moore and KC Peterbilt for doing such a great job.  Also, a big thanks to ECR Mulch, PDI Performance Products, Trans-Clean Truck wash, and Nate Henderson and the crew at Tri-State Kenworth in Enfield, CT.

Sometimes in life "less is more" and that is clearly seen in Scott Ballard’s custom "old-school" Peterbilt 389.  The one time glider kit has been transformed into a showstopping yellow and black beauty and helps us at Movin' Out kick off 2012 with a bang as our January pick for Working Show Truck of the Month.
