Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund Seeks Drivers for Traveling Wall Replica
|
The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund has launched a nationwide search for a driving team to transport its half-scale replica of The Wall, called "The Wall That Heals," around the United States. The replica's travel season usually lasts about 10 months out of the year and includes 20-25 stops. The exhibit is transported by a 53-foot, fifth-wheel trailer that converts into a museum chronicling the Vietnam War era and the unique healing power of The Wall. Candidates must have a commercial driver's license and be able to transport the replica, supervise set up and tear down, and conduct media interviews as needed. There are two positions available, and established driving teams or couples are preferred. For more information, contact Dan Schenk, (202) 393-0090, ext. 118, or dschenk@vvmf.org. Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund Fact Sheet: Based in Washington, D.C., the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund is the non-profit organization authorized by the U.S. Congress in 1980 to build a national memorial dedicated to all who served with the U.S. Armed Forces in the Vietnam War. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial, which has come to be known as The Wall, was dedicated in 1982. Two years later a bronze statue, The Three Servicemen, and a flagpole were added to the site on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. The dedication of a statue to remember and honor the women who served in Vietnam took place on Veterans Day 1993. Since the dedication, the Memorial Fund has continued to co-host annual Memorial and Veterans Day observances at The Wall with the National Park Service and takes an active role in assessing and providing for the long-term needs of the three-acre site. Additionally, the Memorial Fund has expanded its original mission and has developed a series of outreach programs dedicated to preserving the legacy of The Wall, to promoting healing and to educating about the impact of the Vietnam War. The Memorial Fund's primary activities are summarized below: •Host ceremonies on Mother's Day, Father's Day, Memorial Day and Veterans Day, which allow the public to remember and pay tribute to friends and loved ones whose names are inscribed on the Memorial; •Develop comprehensive and balanced educational materials that incorporate the lessons of the Vietnam War era to provide students with a greater sense of responsibility, leadership and citizenship. A multimedia curriculum, Echoes From The Wall: History, Learning and Leadership Through the Lens of The Vietnam War Era, was distributed free of charge to the nation's 40,000 secondary schools; •Recruit teachers from across the country for membership in the Teach Vietnam Teachers' Network, a select group of educators who serve as the Memorial Fund's "ambassadors," supporting and promoting its initiatives in their home states. The Memorial Fund provides educational materials and professional development opportunities for Teachers' Network members; •Coordinate and manage The Wall That Heals touring exhibition, featuring a half-scale replica of The Wall and a museum that brings the Memorial's healing legacy to more than 30 communities annually. Nearly two million people have visited the Traveling Wall since its inception in November 1996; •Manage activities and cultivate membership for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Corporate Council, a distinguished group of leaders in business and government who advance and support the mission of the Memorial Fund; •Provide the public with an opportunity to learn more about the war, the Memorial and the Memorial Fund through our Web site www.vvmf.org; •Manage In Memory program that sets aside a day each year to honor those who died as a result of the Vietnam War, but whose deaths do not fit the Department of Defense criteria for inclusion upon The Wall (i.e. deaths that may have resulted from exposure to Agent Orange or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder-induced suicides); •Provide nearly 100 Memorial volunteers with the necessary supplies to continue their useful work of honoring, healing and educating and host an annual appreciation luncheon for these dedicated individuals; •Commission Memorial engineering studies, name additions and status changes; •Store extra granite at Quantico Marine Base and purchase commercial insurance for the Memorial; and •Provide free name rubbings to the public. The Memorial Fund is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization committed to honoring our nation's veterans and educating this and future generations about the impact of the Vietnam War. Gifts from the public and grants from corporations and foundations provide funding for the Memorial Fund's outreach efforts.
