Working Show Truck Of The Month - For Mike VanElswyk, Jr.
By Robert Conrad
Most drivers hope to be running in the black at the end of each haul, but with today's increased operating expenses it sure is difficult. For Mike VanElswyk Jr. running in the black is the goal each month even though he's "Runnin' in the Red" each time he hauls a load with his tricked-out 1994 Peterbilt 379. You see, "Runnin' in the Red" is the nickname for Mike's truck and one look at it will tell you why.
Mike's Peterbilt and 1999 Timpte livefloor trailer make for a stunning combination that stands out thanks to its clean, simple lines and tasteful custom features. The cab and sleeper have lower extension panels that are painted black to match the custom front fenders. There's also a custom bumper, a drop visor, a set of flat-cut straight pipes, single headlights with visors, and extra cab lights on the roof. Polished tanks and half fenders fill out the frame of the truck and Mike has also added polished windshield trim, painted window panels on the doors and extra air cleaner lights.
There is plenty of power in Mike's red beauty thanks to the 500 Detroit engine that's paired with a 9 speed Rockwell transmission and 3:70 Rockwell rears. The engine has been given some extra "giddy-up" thanks to an ECM tune-up and a bigger turbo. Let's just say that this Pete moves! Mike moves plenty of loads of grain, mulchand woodchips, and no matter where he's going, he turns heads with his truck!
Mike wanted to thank his parents for all that they've done for him and he said that his most memorable experience was running with his dad for the first time. Mike VanElswyk, Jr. takes a great deal of pride in his ride and enjoys going to truck shows when he's not driving. He's living proof that you can be "Runnin' in the Red" and still end up in the black!
Movin' Out salutes Mike VanElswyk, Jr., from Newton, NJ, for all of his hard work by choosing him and his polished Petercar as our September Working Show Truck of the Month.
