Miles Are Up At Marten Transport
Marten Transport, a Wisconsin-based certified top paying carrier, continues to provide its drivers with high miles while other truckload carriers are cutting back. This steady amount of productivity is consistent with the company’s unprecedented growth and success as a premium employer and leader in the trucking industry.
“Carriers in today’s industry are struggling due to CSA and new hours of service regulations, as well as electronic logs,” said Tim Norlin, director of recruiting for Marten Transport. “We hear it from drivers all the time that they are getting fewer and fewer miles. Here at Marten, we are overcoming that trend in a big way at all our locations.”
The company has terminal locations in Mondovi, Wis.; Atlanta (Tucker), Ga.; Indianapolis, Ind., Ontario, Calif.; Wilsonville, Ore.; Colonial Heights, Vir.; DeSoto and Laredo Texas; Tampa, Fla.; Phoenix, Ariz.; Memphis, Tn.; Kansas City, Ks.; Carlisle, Pa.
Marten’s miles per tractor are up significantly. The average miles per truck are up 9% between the second quarter of 2011 and the second quarter of 2013, giving drivers an additional $1,000 on average per quarter. Part of the reason for this increase is the company’s strong stance on detention time. By charging customers for detention and paying drivers $20 per hour in detention pay, Marten’s customers are committed more than ever to loading and unloading in an efficient manner.
“Most of our customers are willing to make sure everything happens within the two hour time limit we give them before we start charging detention,” said Norlin. “We monitor our drivers’ hours closely to make sure we maximize their productivity every day. We do our best to utilize every bit of their time as possible which results in bigger checks for the driver.”
This consistent increase in miles follows other significant growth during the last several months. Earlier this year, Marten rolled out several pay increases and enhancements to its compensation package, including a layover pay increase, holiday bonus pay and a new tiered monthly performance bonus.
To work for Marten, drivers must have a CDL-A with hazmat endorsement, be at least 22 years of age and have a minimum of six months OTR experience. Drivers at Marten can expect competitive pay corresponding with experience level, frequent home time, premier equipment and an excellent benefits program.
