Working Show Truck Of The Month - Mike Bunning & Scott Martel/M And E Transportation, LLC
By Robert Conrad
Nestled in the countryside of historic Brooklyn, CT, is a bulk hauling company that may not be the biggest in the industry, but it just might be the best when it comes to dependable service and customer satisfaction. M and E Transportation, LLC is owned by Mike Bunning and specializes in bulk transport and high quality bulk materials such as all types of sand, stone, mulch, and loam.
M and E's trucks have been a familiar sight on the roads of CT, NY, and MA since Mike founded the company back in 1988. Their company motto is "Trucking For Life" and Mike and his entire crew represent the trucking industry with class just like their trucks do.
This month we are featuring an M and E truck that has been rebuilt twice due to unfortunate circumstances. This 1982 Peterbilt 359 has, once again, been given a new lease on life and upholds the "Trucking For Life" concept each day with driver Scott Martel behind the wheel. Scott hauls sand and stone to Southern CT, NY, and MA with M and E's orange and black beauty hooked to their 2014 MAC frameless dump trailer. Return trips are with various bulk materials and Scott hauls 36 1/2 tons thru CT, NY, and MA (legally) on a daily basis. Power comes from a 425 CAT engine that's paired with a 15 over transmission and a set of 3:90 Eaton rears.
The "old school" look comes out on the truck and its brilliant orange paint is complemented by black fenders, fuel tanks, and frame rails. The boys at M and E decided to give the truck a clean, smooth look on its latest makeover so they removed the hood emblems, roof lights, and air horns. They added a painted drop visor, painted lower cab & sleeper panels, and painted single, round headlights. The truck's hood has been extended 6" to accommodate the air charger for the CAT 425 B engine, which replaced the previous CAT 400 A model. By the way, the engine just happens to be painted orange to match the cab.
Other custom features include a 20' bumper; 7" Dynaflex exhaust w/Pickett elbows, a louvered grille, and a set of Pro-Tech polished full fenders over the rears. Mike's son, Eric Bunning, fabricated the custom rear light panel as well as the flush-mount deckplates.
Mike said that he and his entire crew do 95% o their own rebuilding, repairs, and painting in their small 2,500 square foot shop. He prefers to do things in house to keep costs down as much as possible and to make sure it's done right. Mike said that he's very proud of his crew and his most memorable experience with this truck has been re-building it twice and having it turn out "sweeter each time.” Driver Scott Martel keeps the truck shining at all times and Mike wanted to thank him for being such a hard worker.
In his own words, Mike said that Scott is both a "smooth operator and a great chauffeur for his "old school" Pete.” Mike also wanted to send special thanks out to his son, Eric, who does all of M and E's metal fabrication as well as the aluminum, paint, and detailing work on the fleet. In addition, Robert and Phillip Normandie get the nod for being the truck's original owners and builders from its previous life. Last, but certainly not least, owner Mike Bunning wanted to thank all of his drivers and mechanics for all of their hard work and dedication because they help keep M and E "Trucking Fro Life" and follow nobody else's path in the industry!
Movin' Out salutes the entire M and E Transportation, LLC family, including owner Mike Bunning and featured driver Scott Martel with our pick for November's Working Show Truck of the month. We know that this is one company that is not just in the trucking business, but they are "Trucking For Life"!
