Shorepower Technologies Extends Free Power Offer through End of March
PORTLAND, OR… Shorepower Technologies has extended its free power incentive available for truckers. Truckers can now use Shorepower Technologies’ power pedestals for free for an additional two months, through March 31, 2013.
“Truckers can fully utilize and see for themselves how nice it is to ‘plug in,’ run all their devices that can use AC-power,” said Alan Bates, Shorepower’s vice president of marketing. “Truckstop electrification can also work in concert with onboard battery-powered and diesel-powered auxiliary power units, which saves truck and APU batteries. It can help APUs run longer between scheduled maintenances and extend their service life.
“But, most importantly, we want truckers to stay warm with either a space heater or onboard AC-compatible APU, particularly as winter storms hit the Northeast and the West regions this week,” Bates added.
Since the beginning of the fourth quarter, Shorepower Technologies has seen a 72 percent increase in the number of truckstops adding electric plug-in power pedestals to their locations and a 140 percent increase in the number of electrified spaces since the beginning of 2012.
“We’ve seen more and more interest from truckstop operators who want to offer their customers options for avoiding truck engine idling,” he said. “Truckstop operators recognize that by responding to, and in some cases anticipating truck fleet and truck operator demand, they can establish themselves as the truckstop of choice.
“When diesel costs $3.25 per gallon, a truck operator can save $4,000 per year over idling the truck's engine – a significant sum in an industry where margins are thin and efficiency is critical to being competitive,” Bates said.
“Truckstop operators also recognize that they’re doing something good for the environment and helping fleets reduce their carbon footprints, which can make them more appealing to shippers who keep a close tab on their supply chains,” he added.
Shorepower Technologies has installed 55 locations with power pedestals as of the end of 2012, with 23 locations going online in the fourth quarter. The 55 locations offer more than 1,250 electrified parking spaces, some with cable TV also available through the pedestal. Twenty of the locations provide connections to 480-volt power for hybrid refrigerated trailers, (eTru).
The power pedestals are being installed as part of the Department of Energy’s Shorepower Truck Electrification Project (STEP) — administered through Cascade Sierra Solutions, a non-profit based in Eugene, Ore. Since 2010, STEP has resulted in a 210 percent increase in the number of truckstops across the United States adding power pedestals. “We’re building awareness and ‘market presence’ by educating drivers and fleets about locations and the benefits of plugging in,” Bates said. “We’re in discussions with a number of large fleets interested in using our service on a wide scale. As a result, our host site partners are very excited about bringing electrification to their truckstops because they foresee a day very soon when even more truck fleets will demand plug-ins. And they know if they provide them now, they will be much more competitive in the marketplace.”
