FPPF – Products Formulated For Today’s Diesel Fuels
By Steve Pollock
BUFFALO, NY… By the 1970s the quality of diesel fuel was declining, one of the biggest problems being water in the fuel. During cold weather fuel was gelling and filters and fuel lines were icing up. The high wax content of the fuel was also causing filter problems. There were few, if any, fuel additives available and the ones that were available just weren’t getting the job done.
Mr. Chris Lory of Buffalo N.Y. recognized the need for a brand new quality fuel additive that would address diesel fuel problems. He established the FPPF Chemical Company in 1975. Lory soon had FPPF chemists develop a product that would eliminate water, lubricate and help keep fuel from icing and gelling. The product they developed was named Fuel Power. It was so well received that the company took its name from the phrase “Fuel Power – Powers Fuel” or “FPPF” for short. To this day Fuel Power remains FPPF’s signature fuel treatment product and has been used by diesel engine owners for 38 years.
FPPF Chemical Co. expanded its line of fuel additives in the eighties with the introduction of new Antigel products: Polar Power for trucks and equipment and HOT 4 in 1 for heating oils. As the additive technologies continued to improve FPPF stayed on the cutting edge with formulation innovations and new multifunctional products
When low sulfur and ultra low sulfur fuels became the standard, additional additive products were added to the FPPF product line including 2 fuel lubricity products: Lubricity plus Fuel Power, Lubricity 100% and a multifunctional stabilizer: FPPF’s Super Fuel Stabilizer
Over the years drivers have come to look for the familiar white 8 oz. bottle of Fuel Power at their local truck stop to solve their diesel fuel problems. FPPF manufactures Fuel Power in a concentrated form, so a single 8 oz. bottle will treat 240 gallons of fuel or the equivalent of one fill-up. It is also available in 55-gallon drum containers and bulk tote bins.
Since 1975 FPPF has developed over 20 products to treat diesel fuel and bio diesel as well as cleaning products, gas treatment additives, biocide and even a cooling system treatment. Many of these products are also used in marine applications.
FPPF’s line-up of multifunctional winter additives has evolved to not only eliminate water and prevent waxing and gelling, but to also provide lubricity while cleaning injectors and improving cold flow.
Total Power, a multi-functional additive, is the next generation of winter additives to offer the technology of Fuel Power with a cetane booster and lubricity agent. Polar Power continues to be the product of choice for thousands of truckers for treatment in extreme cold and Melt Down is an emergency treatment designed to melt gelled fuel in about 20 minutes. All products meet government and OEM standards and are safe to use in all diesel engines, including the new DPF and SCR equipped trucks.
The new low sulfur and ultra-low sulfur fuels are more conducive to bacterial growth that thrives on water in the fuel. This bacterial problem is especially acute in marine applications where large quantities of fuel are stored for extended periods of time in the fuel tank. FPPF’s Killem Biocide will kill bacteria, suspending it in the fuel to be purged by the fuel filter. Initial treatment of an extreme problem will often plug the fuel filter as the bacteria is purged, but used regularly will allow normal fuel filter maintenance intervals and prevent bacterial growth.
FPPF’s newest alternative product is Liquid Muscle, which conditions all types of fuel. Liquid Muscle improves engine performance, increasing fuel economy while lubricating and cleaning intake valves and injectors and also reduces fuel pump, injector and engine wear. Liquid Muscle also guarantees no fuel gelling and will reduce emissions and smoking. It is available in ½ gallon containers that will treat up to 240 gallons in the winter and up to 750 gallons in the summer. FPPF has also developed Top Lube, a fuel treatment that lubricates the entire fuel system, including fuel injectors, cylinders, valves and pistons. Top Lube can be used in both diesel and gas engines.
Bio Diesel Fuel Power is also offered by FPPF and is a complete treatment for bio diesel fuel that disperses water, eliminating gelling and also contains a biocide. It is available in both regular and winter formula.
Summer products from FPPF include: truck and trailer cleaners, including Lustre Bright for polished aluminum; Trailer Bright for oxidized aluminum; and Truck Wash, a concentrated cleaner for use on chrome and painted surfaces. While most Class 8 diesel engines perform best with a minimum cetane rating of 45, refiners typically supply a product in the 40 to 41-cetane range. Smaller diesel engines in the car and pick-up class require an even higher cetane level to optimize fuel combustion. FPPF offers 8+ Cetane Booster to raise cetane levels and help your engine achieve a more complete fuel burn, enhancing performance and fuel economy – in some cases as high as 7% better mpg, while also reducing emissions.
FPPF has grown to be a global leader in diesel additives. The company distributes its products in the U.S.A. in all 50 states, Canada, Latin America, Europe and Australia. It can be found in nearly every truck stop in the U.S.A. and services not only the transportation industry, but the construction, agriculture and marine industries as well. FPPF even offers a complete home heating oil treatment product called Hot 4 In 1. Rest assured as new diesel and gas formulations are marketed, FPPF will be developing new fuel additives to treat them.
