Owner-Operator Builds “Dream Truck”
By Steve Pollock
NORTH JACKSON, OH… December 17th was an exciting day for owner-operator Richard Vaughn from Malone, Texas. Richard took delivery of his new 2012 Western star Glider custom built by TSI Western Star of North Jackson, Ohio. Vaughn is leased to Roadrunner Transportation Services and has been a Professional Truck Driver for 27 years, 15 as an owner-operator.
Richard Vaughn wanted to have a glider built to his exact specifications, incorporating several fuel saving products. The glider was designed around delivering maximum fuel efficiency. Vaughn is a long time fan of Kevin Rutherford. The hitch was, as Richard explained, “Finding a builder who would give me exactly what I wanted.” Vaughn had heard of TSI Western Star and saw their ad in Movin’ Out, so he got in touch with TSI. Richard stated, “I wasn’t on the phone very long with Bill Moore before I realized that this guy knew what he was talking about!” Bill helped Richard to spec his dream glider and TSI built it for him.
Vaughn’s new 2012 glider is a 4900SB (set back axle) with a 244” wheelbase. The engine is a pre-emission factory reman 12.7 litre 60 Series Detroit. Vaughn chose not to alter the engine in order to keep his factory warranty. The transmission is a 13 speed Eaton. Here, however, is where Richard Vaughn’s glider becomes “unique.” Vaughn had his transmission and rear end gears and wheel bearings treated with MicroBlue. He had a 2:64 rear end installed and a pusher axle with a lift. Vaughn is running 50W synthetic as well. Some of the “goodies” Vaughn had installed include: OPS Oil Filtration System; Turbo 3000D; heated wiper blades and fender mirrors; Artic Fox fuel heater; Teltek weight gauges; and Centrimatic Wheel Balancers. Vaughn also runs all position tires the entire way around his truck.
The factory saving options Vaughn was able to get on his Western Star include: an under hood air cleaner; Aero Bumper; exhaust mounted behind the sleeper; deluxe fairing package; cab mounted mirrors; and a sleeper top cap (Vaughn pulls dry van). Vaughn traded his 2005 Freightliner Columbia to TSI Western Star and was able to drive the truck right up until the day his glider was done. Vaughn’s Columbia saw an average fuel economy of 5.8 mpg “on a good day.” An initial report from Richard Vaughn reveals that he is doing a solid 7-mpg in the first 7,700 miles during the dead of winter. Both Vaughn and Bill Moore are excited to see what type of fuel economy Vaughn’s custom built Western Star glider will produce once it is past its “break-in” period. Movin’ Out will keep you posted on Vaughn’s progress.
