Melton Truck Lines – The Award Winning Flatbed Carrier
By Steve Pollock
Tulsa, OK…From the drivers to the equipment to the office personnel, Melton Truck Lines has grown to be one of the nation’s premier flatbed carriers. The irregular route 48 state flatbed carrier was voted among the best carriers to drive for in 2010 and received an honorable mention in 2011. Melton’s driver pay scale is amongst the top 5% in the nation. Melton has also been awarded the President’s “E Star Award” from the Department of Commerce for Excellence in International Commerce.
The company was founded in 1954 when Bert and Gladys Melton purchased a small operating authority and a couple of trucks. Based in Crossett, Arkansas, Melton initially hauled lumber and roofing materials throughout Arkansas, Missouri, Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico. With Bert’s untimely passing in 1957, the ownership of the companytransferred to his wife Gladys.
William Duncan McRae purchased the company from Gladys and out of respect for Bert, retained the Melton name William Duncan, using his background at IBM, created the first transportation software in the industry for Melton. The software created a significant competitive advantage. In 1980 Melton Truck Lines, Inc. was approved by U.S. Customs as a bonded carrier, laying the groundwork for “Mexican Relay Trailer Service” well before the NAFTA agreement. In 1989 Bob Peterson founded GlasTran, a Tulsa, Oklahoma based carrier serving the glass industry. The company started with 30 leased tractors, 36 trailers and six people in operations.
Under Bob Peterson’s leadership the “new Melton” has flourished, growing to be a leader in the flatbed industry and currently employing over 1,000 of the best Professional Truck Drivers available. Today Melton is an exclusive flatbed carrier serving over 5,000 customers with their signature fleet of clean and impeccably maintained blue Kenworth T660 tractors.
Before founding GlasTran, Bob Peterson became a truck driver, in order to gain a better understand what professional truck drivers face each day. Using this insight, Bob has created a work environment at Melton that is conducive to driver retention and well being. The components are simple: good wages and good equipment, as well as, respect and support for Professional Truck Drivers and their families. The payback is a great place to work with a low turnover rate and superior CSA scores.
Bob Peterson states, “Having been a driver, I understand the importance of having helpful 24/7 support. I am committed to maintaining a staff of smart, friendly people who respond quickly to our drivers, special vendors, and convenient healthcare providers. These individuals and services can help our drivers balance work, health, and family.”
Melton Truck Lines is adamant about providing the very best equipment for their drivers. The company owns 1,000 Kenworth with an average age of 1.5 years. The pools of 1,600 trailers have an average age of 3.5 years. The equipment is kept clean at all times, even in adverse weather conditions. The entire fleet is 100% Airide. Melton plans to add 100 additional tractors to the fleet in 2013. While wages may be arguably the most important factor at most jobs, Melton is among the top 5% of flatbed carriers for driver pay. The company places equal importance on their drivers and their family’s well being.
Trucking is a lonely job that requires many days and nights away from home. That is why Melton has a liberal rider and pet policy, so drivers can take a piece of home with them, if they choose to. Melton understands the challenges truck driving; as a result, the company recognizes & rewards their drivers for safety, performance, and fuel savings. In addition to mileage-based pay, drivers are compensated for many other duties as well, they include the following: tarping, extra stops and detention to name a few.
For today’s Professional Truck driver, when it comes to the freedom of the open road, the devil (and stress) is in the details. Safety, regulation, extra traffic, and on time delivery can add up to a “truckload” of stress. That is why Melton has instituted programs that support the driver and their families both on and off the road. A comprehensive benefits package, which includes quality health, dental, and vision, in addition to a 401K and Profit Sharing Plan.
But Melton takes health care a step further with their iCare Program. iCare emphasizes preventive screening, wellness and fitness and rewards drivers and their families for participating. Part of the iCare Program includes registered nurses, and onsite clinics at the Laredo, Texas and Tulsa terminals. Melton also offers drivers and their families a heath care concierge service, “Compass”, a 24/7 service that will assist them in navigating the health care system.
Melton has also instituted “Lifeworks”, their 24/7 Employee Assistance Program that offers complete family support while the driver is on the road or at home. The LifeWorks EAP Service helps Melton families find services such as: plumbers, attorneys, and counseling while their spouse is on the road. This service can help manage the anxiety and stresses of home, while the driver is on the road. Melton Truck Lines operates terminals in Tulsa, OK; Birmingham, AL; Masury, OH; as well as Dallas, TX; Laredo, TX and El Paso, TX. The company will soon be building a new corporate office facility in Tulsa that will include many new driver amenities.
