1st Annual Keystone Diesel Truck Nationals At The Grove
by Robert Conrad
Maple Grove Raceway, located in scenic Mohnton, PA, has been hosting high-horsepowered events since 1962 and has been called "The World's Fastest Dragstrip." On July 27,2013, "The Grove" hosted the 1st Annual Keystone Diesel Truck Nationals At The Grove as hundreds of diesel semis and pickups took over the track which usually is the home of hot rods and funny cars. The diesel crowd gave new meaning to the words high horsepower and the sounds of approaching Jake brakes and screaming diesel engines filled the air on a picture- perfect Saturday in late July.
A steady line of combos and bobtails rolled into "The Grove" all day long and the final count of registered semis reached 368, with close to 100 diesel pickups on hand as well. Spectators got to see some of the East Coast's best looking working show trucks at this inaugural event. The old school iron that PA is known for seemed to be rolling out of the nearby cornfields to come join in the fun on the show fields.
Show organizers Randy Kaylor, from Trik Trux by Pro-Fab Associates and Josh Riccio, from SuperShow Rigs.com, teamed with the show's main sponsor, Mack Trucks, and Elite Level sponsors Hunter Peterbilt & Denver Truck Painting, to put on a top notch event that has to be considered one the best of the entire truck show season! This event was actually a combination of several shows in one. There was the judged showfield, which was full of custom trucks competing for awards in a number of classes. The "just-for-fun", non-judged showfield featured PA's own Exit 21 Bash crew and their trucks-including show regulars Justin Lang, Paul Riggle & Sons, and Reinsfelder Trucking. Finally, the ATCA's PA chapter featured a large number of classic rigs from days gone by. Spectators filled all of the show fields and checked out all of the incredible rigs. The vendor area was also a popular place with everything from chrome polish to diesel performance products on display. Show sponsors Hunter Peterbilt and Denver Truck Panting had their booths open for spectators to see and the show's main sponsor, Mack Trucks, had their impressive line-up of heavy -duty trucks on display, including the new Mack Titan. As if this wasn't enough, the diesel drag racing took place all day long with drivers competing for the "King of the Grove" championship and cash prizes.
John Dorff and his team of judges had the difficult task of picking the winners in each of the show classes. They worked hard all day long and a number of lucky winners went home with awards. The 1st Annual Mack Trucks-Keystone Diesel Nationals was a huge success thanks to the show's organizers, sponsors, and volunteers-along with Maple Grove Raceway.
The spectators and participants all went home with smiles on their faces after a day of non-stop action. This is one event, which should continue to grow in the years to come and promises to be even bigger in 2014!
