Hot Trucks & Hot Rods Shine At The Benefit For Bella
By Robert Conrad
On October 14,2012 the "Benefit For Bella" was held at the Whiskey Cafe in Lyndhurst, New Jersey. East Coast Large Cars founder Richie Acosta teamed up with the American Cruisers Car Club to host a benefit car, truck, and bike show for a special little girl, Bella Benetatos who suffers from Rett Syndrome.
Early morning drizzle and grey skies gave way to sunshine by noon and over 100 custom cars and tricked-out semi trucks showed up to help raise money for Bella's medical expenses.
Bella was diagnosed at age 4 with Rett Syndrome, a severe neurological disease that almost exclusively affects females. Patients show a normal early growth pattern but then experience a slowing of development, problems walking, seizures, loss of speech, and overall sensory and intellectual disability. Although it affects one in 10-15,000 female births, Rett Syndrome is often misdiagnosed as Autism or Epilepsy. Currently there is no cure, but there is hope, as research has shown that the use of insulin-like Growth Factor 1(IGF-1) may partially reverse the symptoms in infected laboratory mice.
Despite her battle with this cruel disease for the past four years, Bella continues to be a fighter. She walked around with her family looking at all of the custom cars and trucks on display, and even took time to pose for a couple of photos with a Richie Acosta and a group of big-hearted truckers who showed up to support her. The show turned out to be a big success and was a labor of love for Bella and her family. Everyone who participated showed that the true meaning of life is families helping families. Anyone who would like to help Bella and her family can send a donation to: Isabella Benetatos, 90 Riverview Court, Secaucus, NJ 07094. You can make a difference by helping this brave, little angel and her family continues to fight this disease and strive towards a cure.
