TOMAH, WI… This year’s Shell Rotella SuperRigs® event was held on June 20-22 in Tomah, Wisconsin at the junction of Interstates 90 and 94. The SuperRigs® competition was held in conjunction with the Budweiser Dairyland Super National Truck and Tractor Pulls, a NTPA sanctioned event. Shell awarded $25,000 in cash and prizes with 18 working trucks receiving awards. There were approximately 90 trucks registered in the field of competitors. In addition, 12 lucky participants were chosen for the 2014 Shell Rotella SuperRigs® Calendar.
Shell Rotella has sponsored the SuperRigs® event for 31 years and each year they try to improve on the previous year’s event. In order to create a more interesting venue for both SuperRigs® participants and attendees, Shell chose to hold the event in conjunction with one of the Budweiser Series NTPA Truck and Tractor Pulls. There were many SuperRigs® participants from Wisconsin and surrounding states as well as from all over the country. Some of the most beautiful trucks on the highway were on display for everyone’s enjoyment.
Each SuperRigs® event is unique and the SuperRigs® competition is moved to a new location each year to encourage different competitors to attend. Shell tries very hard to accommodate the needs of the truck show participants and listens to their concerns, addressing them if possible. Since the SuperRigs® event is held at a different location each year, it is not always possible to find a facility large enough that offers pavement for the show truck parking. Consequently it is often necessary for the show trucks to park in gravel lots or in some cases, a grassy field large enough to accommodate everyone. This year’s event at Tomah presented its own challenge. On Thursday, June 2oth, the weather was so hot and dry that dust became an issue, necessitating having a tractor from the pulling track to water the parking lot. Towards day’s end, as an impending rainstorm approached, judging hours were extended to allow as many competitors as possible to be judged before the rain. It rained both Friday and Saturday morning, causing starting delays for the truck and tractor pulls. Once the rain stopped, drivers were busy wiping off water spots to restore their rigs to a super shine. Drivers pre-registered were given a ditty bag full of essentials, including sunscreen and earplugs as well as a case of Shell Rotella oil.
MAC Trailers sponsored a dinner on Friday for the SuperRigs® competitors and Shell held a lunch for them on Saturday. In addition to the truck and tractor pulls on Friday night, a Light Show and Truck Parade on the pulling track was held, complete with fireworks. Saturday afternoon the trophies and awards were given out.
