LCM Southern Classic 2012
By Steve Ford
A venue change is one of those things that can really kill a show, BUT thanks to the ‘awesome LargeCarMag community’ that wasn’t the case with the 2012 LargeCarMag Southern Classic. Due to circumstances beyond our control, we were forced to find a new home for the Southern Classic a little late in the game. We checked a few places out along the I-95 corridor, but none seemed to offer what we were looking for. We would discuss this with members/friends and fans when they would call to inquire and decided to follow up with a ‘lead’ that was suggested by several to contact Lee Hi Travel Plaza In Lexington, VA who would be celebrating 30 years (WOW – that’s fantastic isn’t it!!) in business! We contacted them, agreed to meet with Corey, the general manager at the truck stop and they welcomed up with open arms! We decided that this beautiful and well maintained location with its very accommodating staff would be the home of our 2012 event. As you all know, our purpose for this event is to have a day to give back to you, the drivers, friends, family and supporters of the trucking community. We do NOT do judging at these shows. It’s a day to come, park, hang out and enjoy YOUR day. So upon arriving at Lee Hi on October 19th , we were really excited to see the lineup of some of the largest rides in the country already waiting for us. By the end of the night Friday, the lot was already ¾ full! Saturday morning brought even more trucks and spectators plus the kids area with the obstacle course, temporary tattoo station and kids games with toys/lollipops etc was set up. When the drivers arrived, they were given big, plentiful goody bags at registration as well as door prizes that were donated by our MANY donating friends. We still have a few of the show shirts also, so check out our online store for those if interested – while supplies last. We had an event take place during the show that makes this 3rd Annual alittle unique. Our truck driver friend, Stevie Taylor and fiancé Crystal Harben, tied the knot, on our stage! We were honored to have them share their special day with us. In addition to this, Lee Hi hired the band Southpaw to play on Saturday evening and ofcourse we had a light show and truck movies to conclude the great evening. We have also already discussed with Lee Hi, we would like to have the show at their location again next year. Thank you to all of you who helped us make this event unforgettable (James and your crew for feeding us, Bill Miller for driving the Firebird to the show and all the rest!) We appreciate and are grateful to all of you!! Mark the date for next year, October 19th 2013. See you in Lexington!
Thank you to our Donating Friends!!
