10 MPG With A Factory Equipped Cascadia
Five or six years ago 10 mpg in a Class 8 over-the-road factory equipped truck was only a dream. A couple of weeks ago it became a reality for owner-operator Henry Albert.
Although Henry has hit 10 mpg in his Freightliner Cascadia on a select number of “good days”, this was his first full tank of fuel that he posed an average of 10 mpg on the entire tank of fuel, traveling a total of 1,438 miles. His 2014 Cascadia Evolution has a DD15 engine.
The Cascadia Evolution features factory aerodynamic enhancements that Freightliner has made and Henry has made some aerodynamic improvements to his van trailer as well. Henry’s fuel economy is proof that a factory spec’d truck can achieve superior fuel economy by incorporating smart technologies from the OEM. Henry was posting solid “9s” with the Cascadia right out of the box and since entering the engine break-in period at around 40,000 miles; the fuel economy has been improving.
Although excited to finally achieve 10 mpg, Henry is anxious to see if he can consistently achieve 10 mpg in the months to come. He will update our readers as to his progress, as well as explain some of the aerodynamic enhancements to his trailer and driving habits that have helped to contribute to his “double digit” fuel economy.
