Garrett Awarded Trucker Buddy of the Month for December 2011
Tuscaloosa, AL… Randy Garrett, a driver for Arch Wood Protection, has been awarded Trucker Buddy of the Month for December 2011 following his nomination by Jennifer Austin, a teacher at Demorest Elementary School in Demorest, Ga.
Austin’s nomination read in part: “Mr. Garrett has been sending postcards and visiting my class for the last two years. You should see the twinkle in my students' eyes when I announce, ‘We have mail from our Trucker Buddy!’ They love hearing from him. We always pull out the map so we can see exactly where he has been and how far he had to travel. We also use the postcards to help us review in Social Studies.”
Not only does Garrett send postcards, but he also comes to the Demorest Elementary School for visits. While there, he eats lunch with the class and sometimes brings cupcakes which the students especially appreciate as dessert! During his Christmas visits he brings the entire class goodie bags with treats and, of course, they love that he cares enough to give something to each student. He has done several educational talks using his truck as a prop and has even emailed pictures showing a typical day of driving for him. This helps the students understand what it’s like to be a driver and how important it is to transport products across the country.
Austin says, “Mr. Garrett is a fine example for my students, and I am so proud that he is our Trucker Buddy. Occasionally the students will see him out in public (store, movie, sporting event, etc.). They always come back the next day to tell the whole class that they got to see their Trucker Buddy. They truly consider him to be a hero. I am thankful for his role in being the positive role model that so many of my students need. Thank you, Trucker Buddy, for the impact of your program.”
Trucker Buddy International, an independent, non-profit 501(c) (3) organization, often called the number one trucking image campaign in North America, has helped educate schoolchildren and introduce educators to the trucking industry. This gives them the world through the eyes of a professional truck driver. The Trucker Buddy program helps to educate and mentor schoolchildren via a pen pal relationship between professional truck drivers and children in grades K-8 as supervised by their teachers.
After an extensive screening process, the professional truck drivers are matched with a class and as directed by the teacher, drivers share news about their travels with their class. Students write letters and send pictures to their drivers. Students' skills in reading, writing, geography, mathematics, social studies, and history are enhanced and learning is made fun.
Since 1992, Trucker Buddy International has helped educate over a million schoolchildren and introduced them to caring, compassionate men and women, professional truck drivers. The on-going success of the program is due to driver volunteers, participating teachers and the contributions of sponsors. There is no cost to the drivers or teachers to participate in the program. The Trucker Buddy of the Month is sponsored by Daimler Truck Products and includes, Freightliner Trucks, Western Star Trucks and Detroit. Each class of the winning TBOM receives a gift pack of snack from Frito-Lay. The Trucker Buddy program is funded entirely by sponsorships and donations.
