Women In Trucking Foundation now accepting Scholarships
The Women In Trucking Association’s mission includes helping women overcome obstacles in entering the trucking industry. For some, the challenge might include paying for an education. In 2012, the Women In Trucking Scholarship Foundation was formed specifically to offer funding for training for members.
This year’s scholarship application process began January 1st and will continue until March 1, 2014. Funding is available in four areas: leadership, technical training, safety, and driving. “Scholarships are the reason that the WIT Foundation exists,” said Jan Hamblin, Chairwoman of the Foundation board of directors. The foundation is a separate organization from the Women In Trucking Association and is funded totally by tax-deductible contributions.
“We are also seeking donations from the industry, as the more funds we have to offer, the more scholarships we can provide,” said Hamblin.
Last year six members (five women and one man) received scholarships from the Foundation. All six requested grants to earn their commercial driver’s licenses. However, members are encouraged to apply for funding for any one of the four areas of training, as safety, leadership and technical skills are also important to the trucking industry.
Information can be found at womenintruckingfoundation.org. The applicant must be a member of the Women In Trucking Association (or the family member of a corporate member) and be enrolled in a training program in one of the four areas of study. Funds are to be used for tuition and checks will be mailed directly to the school. If you're not already a member, you can join here (student's dues are $10 annually.)
Women In Trucking was established to encourage the employment of women in the trucking industry, promote their accomplishments and minimize obstacles faced by women working in the trucking industry. Membership is not limited to women, as sixteen percent of its members are men who support the mission. Women In Trucking is funded by its members and the generous support of Gold Level Partners: Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems, LLC, Daimler Trucks NA, Frito-Lay NA, Great Dane Trailers, Hyundai Translead, and Walmart and Silver Level Partner C.H. Robinson. For more information visit www.WomenInTrucking.org or call 888-464-9482.
